Competition One-Act
The Elephant Man Title.jpg

by Bernard Pomerance

John Merrick has grown up as a circus peculiarity, a man with a hideous face and body, shown to horrified spectators for pennies. But when a doctor discovers him and "adopts" him into high British society, the rich and famous find that his intellect and caring heart show them a beauty they never anticipated.

Inspired by real 1880s events, the movie version of this play received eight Oscar nominations, and sparked the creation of the Academy Award for Best Makeup.
